Maintain the best feet for life!

The end goal of treatment at the Foot and Leg Centre is to retrain your feet to their optimal position. When this is achieved and maintained they can naturally heal and adapt to any forces they’re subjected to during everyday life.

Frequency and consistency is the key

This is why when you first begin Foot Mobilisation Therapy, you may likely be asked to visit on a more frequent basis compared to other health practitioners or services, but over time, your visits will occur less often, and adjustments will likely be quite minor. This is a good thing. It means that your feet over time, learn to retain their optimum shape and position.

Self-help is the best

However, like any healthcare initiatives, caring for your feet is not just your practitioner’s job. You need to also take responsibility and do what you can to maintain the neurological changes the treatments create. Doing so will help expedite the feet retraining process, but it’s also just good practice for your body. After all, feet are your foundations and if they’re in optimum position, they can provide optimal performance for your entire body, enabling you to live a healthy, happy, pain-free and productive lifestyle and do all the things and go all the places you want to go.

Walking after an adjustmentWalking in nature

So what can you do to help maintain the neurological changes that occur after a foot adjustment?
After treatment, you should get up from the adjusting table and get into a good habit of walking for 5-10 minutes. This allows the feet to adapt to the new position and helps to keep motion in the 28 bones of the foot. This is a good idea especially if you have a long car ride immediately following treatment.

Exercise Routine

To support your newly straightened feet, engaging in an exercise routine that encourages strengthening, stretching and proprioceptive exercising will really help. Your practitioner will show you specifically what exercises you need to do for your feet. Yoga and Pilates are both good options that can also assist.

Water is extremely important for the feet. For example, cartilage (sponge between the bones) consist largely of water (although this usually declines with age). Therefore, keeping the body well hydrated by drinking water regularly is important to nourish the spaces between those bones and help keep them healthy.

As we go about our days, we participate in a number of activities that may cause the misalignment of bones within the feet. This includes walking on different surfaces, sport, exercising, and wearing unstable footwear. So make good decisions about the shoes you choose. Regardless of their purpose, the shoes you wear should be well balanced, flexible in the right areas, supportive and comfortable.

It may sound like a lot of work to keep your feet in optimal shape, but the benefits of caring for them not only make good sense … they also make for healthier, happier people. And that includes you!
